Better Conversations with Communication Disabilities: A practical guide for clinicians

Suzanne Beeke and Steven Bloch (EDS)

Communication disorders in children and adults arise from a wide range of causes but one unifying factor is their effect on people's everyday lives - the resulting communication disability. This disability affects life opportunities, societal participation and mental health. It impacts on everyday interactions and conversations with others at home, in communities, in education and in healthcare.

There is a growing movement amongst speech and language therapists to offer formal communication partner training (CPT) to tackle the impact of communication disability. Better Conversations is both an approach to the study of conversation in communication disability and a growing suite of CPT intervention programs underpinned by Conversation Analytic principles and methods.

Better Conversations with Communication Disabilities is the first practical resource for clinicians who wish to implement the Better Conversations approach to CPT. This book:

  • provides a clear guide to using the Better Conversations in a range of clinical settings
  • contains case studies, key learning points, practical advice and tips
  • provides contributions from expert clinicians and research-clinicians
  • draws on views and experiences of people who have both delivered and received BC therapy
